The next morning saw a flurry of activity at the inn. Jim raced around the kitchen getting the day’s breakfast prepared as I set up the dining room. The Petersons were the first to arrive, wanting to have an early breakfast before their day’s drive to Santa Fe.

“I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but I’ve never been to Santa Fe,” I said, making conversation as I finished polishing the silverware.

“You must go!” Rachel declared. “We try to go every year or two. It’s one of our favorite places.”

The couple gave me a long list of things I needed to see in Santa Fe if I ever went. I knew there was no way I could ever remember half of what they told me, but I enjoyed listening to them talk about it. “You make it sound so exciting,” I said. “If Jim and I can ever pull ourselves away from the inn, we’ll have to go.”

The Petersons ate a leisurely breakfast, then checked out an hour later. “We had a wonderful stay,” David told me as he signed his credit card slip. “We will definitely be back.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” I said. “We would love to see you again.”

Hannah arrived at nine and immediately went to work doing laundry before Daniel Davies arrived at ten. Susie had the day off, so I knew we were going to be very busy.

“You seem like you’re doing much better this morning,” I said.

“Much better,” she confirmed. “I had a long think last night and decided you’re right. This will all get straightened out, and we’ll be able to get back to normal before we know it.”

“That’s the spirit,” I said. I told her that the Petersons had already left, so she could get started with their room while I served breakfast.

“We have another couple checking in this afternoon,” I said. “The Gibsons.”

I went back into the kitchen, and Jim asked if Nell had come in.

“Are you expecting her?” I asked.

“I made it clear that it was her day off, but you know Nell. She’s going to do whatever she feels like doing.”

“Doesn’t she know she’s just going to make her ankle worse if she keeps putting weight on it?” I muttered.

He shrugged. “Like I said, Nell is going to be Nell.”

Much to our surprise and delight, she seemed to have followed Jim’s advice and didn’t come in that morning. I only hoped that she really was at home resting and not creating mischief elsewhere.

Our last breakfast guests had just finished and left when Daniel Davies came in.

“Let me go upstairs and get Hannah,” I said. “Can I bring you a coffee?”

“No thanks,” he said. “If I have coffee now, I’ll just be awake all day.”

“Suit yourself,” I laughed.

While he was talking with Hannah, I noticed her fidgeting. She responded to each of his questions with short yes-or-no answers.

“You don’t need to be nervous,” I told her. “Mr. Davies is here to help you.”

“I’m sorry,” she replied. “I’ve never talked with a real lawyer before.
